Our Engagement Story

‘Tis the season for engagements, falalalalala ūüéľ

My engagement story went something like this, “You look terrible. Will you marry me?” Ok, maybe something happened in between there. Christmas time is the perfect time for engagements, but I’m biased because I got engaged exactly one year and three days ago today. I’m here to remind you that engagements are not about the perfect proposal…Just look at the “fairytale” bachelor proposals that end up in tabloid flames. It’s about who you’re saying yes to spending the rest of your life with.

Snowy winter wonderland

On Saturday, December 16th, 2017 Jordan and I planned to go hiking at Blood Mountain in Blairsville, GA.

Jordan had been talking about hiking for a few weeks, and I was suspicious that something was up. That day, he brought me a Chick-fil-A breakfast scramble (my favorite!). Unfortunately, my Dysautonomia was acting up. My heart rate was crazy. I was dizzy and felt terrible. Let’s just say the smell of essential oils was strong. I used so many trying to feel better quickly. The though of hiking seemed daunting, but I didn’t want to risk ruining Jordan’s possible proposal plans. When I wouldn’t eat the Chick-fil-A, Jordan knew I was feeling bad and started worrying about the hike. He knows my love of Chick-fil-A too well. I couldn’t hide feeling bad from him.

It snowed the week before. The hiking trail was snowy, and absolutely gorgeous. It was also icy and quite a challenge. I thought I was going to die multiple times. After a couple of miles, we thought they had made it to the top, but discovered there was still a bit left to climb.

You look terrible

Jordan, seeing that I was struggling, said he would go ahead and see how much further it was. About 15 minutes later, he called me on the phone. He said, “Its not much further. Come on up!”

At this point, I wasn’t sure she could get back down the mountain. I was seconds away from saying I couldn’t go anymore. But, Jordan helps me grow and push myself daily (one of the many things I love about him). So, I kept walking and walking and walking and walking….

It turns out Jordan ran most of the remaining distance. It was about a mile to the top. I kept wondering how much longer I had left of this cold torture. Finally, twenty minutes later, I made it to the last steep part. Jordan came around to help me up.

He paused and with a concerned face asked, “Are you alright? You look horrible.” He knows how to flatter me, what can I say? ūüíĀūüŹĽ

We sat down at the peak and took in the beautiful, snow covered view. Jordan said he was going to get a protein bar out of the backpack, and I went to grab it. He stopped me from opening the bag. I hoped there was a ring in there. A moment later Jordan pulled out the stunning ring. He talked about special parts of our relationship and lives. Finally, he asked to be his wife…five minutes after saying I looked terrible. Jordan jokes that the ring was my prize for climbing miles in the snow while sick.

I didn’t die

We both ran on straight adrenaline and made it down the mountain quickly. We had lunch in Blairsville, GA while calling and texting loved ones. When we got back to my parents’ house (after hours of traffic), Jordan’s parents were there. We had a celebratory dinner and I explained how Jordan made me work for my engagement ring.

The moral of the story

When he’s the one, he’s the one. No crazy or elaborate proposal will mean anything, if you’re not saying yes to the right person. And by the way, those imperfect proposals make the best stories and memories. We’ve been married just over a month. I can honestly say it the most incredible feeling to pledge your life to your soulmate. You won’t regret it.
